Overview

A leading steel manufacturing company with a global presence across 26 countries and over 80,000 employees faced significant performance issues with their Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environment. This system is crucial for software design, production monitoring, and remote collaboration. It had started hurting user availability, leading to a significant productivity drop.

Despite the potential for improved productivity, persistent IT challenges like login failures, frozen sessions, and application lag were causing frustration and reducing operational efficiency.

Anunta was onboarded to troubleshoot and optimize the AVD infrastructure, resulting in a transformative boost in IT performance and user satisfaction.

The Struggle: A virtual desktop system that wasn’t delivering to expectations

The client had over 300 Azure Virtual Desktops supporting more than 150 unique users (as of November 2024). The company relied on Windows11 virtual machines (VMs) for software design, production monitoring, and remote collaboration. However, recurring IT challenges disrupted daily operations. As the company’s dependence on AVD increased, so did the issues, affecting employee experience:

  • Frequent login failures delayed access to virtual desktops, slowing down project work.
  • Frozen sessions disrupted productivity, resulting in significant efficiency losses.
  • Slow application load times and long boot cycles led to employees spending valuable time troubleshooting instead of working.

The impact was felt across the organization.

Frequent system crashes necessitated constant reboots, while inefficient asset management further complicated the IT environment. Tracking devices for remote workers and security vulnerabilities in accessing production data created additional risks.

The Anunta Solution: Streamlined control and remote monitoring

Anunta took a comprehensive approach to resolving the client’s challenges and optimizing the AVD infrastructure. Using built-in tools like Azure Monitor, Task Manager, and Resource Monitor, Anunta quickly pinpointed performance bottlenecks and implemented targeted improvements.

The Breakthrough

One key breakthrough was enhancing SQL Server performance, significantly improving query response times. Resource allocation was optimized to ensure the environment could handle high demands without lag, improving system reliability.

Here’s how

Anunta customized the connection process by leveraging Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) for secure authentication.

  • A user launches the RD (remote desktop) client, which connects to Azure AD, and the AD receives the token for authentication.
  • The Gateway verifies this token with the Connection Broker, which queries the Azure SQL database for assigned resources.
  • The Gateway and Broker work together to select the user’s session host, creating a reverse connection through the Windows Virtual Desktop Gateway.

This approach eliminated the need for inbound ports. It is an intelligent reverse proxy method ensuring only pixels reach the client, improving security and streamlining the user experience.
